Christmas day was my birthday. 31 times has our planet we call Earth orbited around the star known as our sun since I was born. I often muse about my place in the universe this way when the customs of the human condition recognize significance in some cosmic milestone. At first, this may seem a bleak and barren way to contemplate my role, leading to nihilism as I stare into the void of space. It may seem a poor starting point to examine my existence and what it all means.
And yet, it is not.
An excellent post today over at Atheist Revolution prompted a comment from me that I wanted to share here. It was in reaction to a different post by the Friendly Atheist regarding freedom of speech. It was a call to ensure we avoid hypocrisy in our responses and reactions to theistic expression. Original blog [...]
“Christmas is my favorite time of the year, folks. Second only to Shark Week, though I still dream of a day when they will combine the two.”
Kentucky, Washington, and religious/Christmas funny goodness. Colbert always has a way to state the facts in such an obvious way. The problem of evil and suffering is [...]
So this is one of those things that really seems like it’s a joke. Perhaps the Onion reported on this? My brief Googling spell couldn’t find anything definitive regarding the authenticity, just many people claiming that it is real. Apparently the reverend on the sign is deceased.
I’ll assume for the time being that this is [...]
Wish You a Merry…Chrismukah?
Continuing the current trend of large-scale mergers and acquisitions, it was announced today at a press conference that Christmas and Hanukkah will merge. An industry source said that the deal had been in the works about 1300 years.
While details were not available at press time, it is believed that the overhead cost [...]
Some of my christian friends are bound to find this insulting…but I am curious as to their rebuttal. Just remember this is attacking christian beliefs…not people who happen to be christian.
Up until now, it seems the atheist community has done a decent job of getting messages out in public in a way that will do some real good. I’ve seen several billboards and bus signs that do a good job of letting other non-theists know they are not alone. Not a great job, but a [...]
I am reacting to a talk given by Güven Güzeldere here on the topic of human flourishing/Eudaimonics, some of this post will be paraphrased.
Two dimensions or goals of religion or other forms of philosophy competing for followers:
Educated Catholics have sown dissent and confusion in the Church, claims bishop
I’m sure many of you have already heard of this. I find it refreshing that the Catholic church has the guts to tell it like it is. That said, this seems like one the the final nails in their coffin. I am going to [...]
Often I’m asked when I bring up my lack of beliefs how I can appreciate life without having god in it, or how I can possibly cope with the idea that I’m going to hell or that there is nothing after death. As a theist, and believe me when I say I was very much of the christian persuasion once upon a time, I never appreciated life. I appreciated a being I’d never seen or heard from for the life he gave me, which I guess to a theist is the same thing…not to me.
In California where I live there are numerous Christians who have, in light of the recent Proposition 8 controversy, felt the need to “fight the good fight and defend marriage.”
I asked one of these crusaders to explain why marriage is only acceptable for a man and a woman. They responded by saying that the Bible [...]
The importance of understanding individuals’ talents and what makes them happy reminded me of Robert M. Price’s book “The Reason Driven Life”. I think it was around chapter 32 where Price discussed the difference between he and Rick Warren on the issue. Warren talks about everyone having their own unique ‘calling’, but if you read between the lines it’s all about being a good christian and doing what god wants you to do. I appreciated Price’s description of his personal conversion away from christianity. He did not feel “fully himself” because of the constraints imposed by the ideology in which he had been entrenched.
. . . if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He [the rich young man] saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour [...]
