Compelling Atheism?
An excellent post today over at Atheist Revolution prompted a comment from me that I wanted to share here. It was in reaction to a different post by the Friendly Atheist regarding freedom of speech. It was a call to ensure we avoid hypocrisy in our responses and reactions to theistic expression. Original blog [...]
Colbert’s The Word – The Unbearable Lightness of Supreme Being
“Christmas is my favorite time of the year, folks. Second only to Shark Week, though I still dream of a day when they will combine the two.”
Kentucky, Washington, and religious/Christmas funny goodness. Colbert always has a way to state the facts in such an obvious way. The problem of evil and suffering is [...]
Let’s Start a Civil War
So this is one of those things that really seems like it’s a joke. Perhaps the Onion reported on this? My brief Googling spell couldn’t find anything definitive regarding the authenticity, just many people claiming that it is real. Apparently the reverend on the sign is deceased.
I’ll assume for the time being that this is [...]
Human Flourishing
The importance of understanding individuals’ talents and what makes them happy reminded me of Robert M. Price’s book “The Reason Driven Life”. I think it was around chapter 32 where Price discussed the difference between he and Rick Warren on the issue. Warren talks about everyone having their own unique ‘calling’, but if you read between the lines it’s all about being a good christian and doing what god wants you to do. I appreciated Price’s description of his personal conversion away from christianity. He did not feel “fully himself” because of the constraints imposed by the ideology in which he had been entrenched.
An Atheist on The Ten Commandments
. . . if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He [the rich young man] saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour [...]
Born Again
I recently watched a film by Markie Hancock titled Born Again….very well done.
You owe it to yourself to watch this film. Very insightful, powerful stuff.
Spokesperson for Proposition 8
I originally posted this on another blog on November 11, but wanted to share it with everyone here too.
This is a better articulation of my thoughts on the matter than I could possibly muster.
The Poor, Persecuted Proponents of Proposition 8 (waaaa!)
I’m not homosexual, which I think helps make my point here. When it comes to something like this, personal incentives are not required to tell right from wrong.
‘Gay fascists’ storm church, attack members
‘Gay’ activists engage in ‘hate crimes’ against Christians
Cass admits he wonders why the incidents have not been called hate crimes. “Had the [...]
On the Anthropomorphization of God
Ascribing human features to a god or gods is something the human species has done ever since the concept of a deity was invented. It comes down to a basic lack of humility leading to assumptions that our species is the center of the universe.
For the same reason, there was an assumption of our planet [...]
Good without God: Secular humanism and morality
WHAT IS MORALITY?
Morality defined in the American Heritage Dictionary:
1. The quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct.
2. A system of ideas of right and wrong conduct: religious morality; Christian morality.
3. Virtuous conduct.
4. A rule or lesson in moral conduct.
Morality comes down to the standards of right or wrong that an individual, community, or society [...]
Views on the theory of evolution
THEORY DOES NOT EQUAL FACT
The theory of evolution is only a theory, and not a fact. Good scientific theory requires the inherent ability to be proven false. Although theories of any kind may seem factual because they have survived “the test of time” and attempts at refutation through experiment, they are not fact. It is [...]
